IS THIS POST ABOUT UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE?

Pro-Life? Pro-Choice? Stem-Cell Research? SCHIP?

4 February, 2008 (19:33) | BlogHer, Bush, children, family, feminism, GOP, government, healthcare, homeless, news, opinion, parenting, politics, poverty, pro-choice, pro-life, Republicans, roe v. wade, SCHIP, women, youtube | By: Catherine Morgan

There is an interesting dialog on the issue of Pro-Life, going on at BlogHer. Shannon has written a post titled Why I’m Pro-Life (there are already over 50 comments).

I wasn’t always pro-life.

In the early ’90′s, I was a card-carrying, sign-waving, Clinton-campaigning pro-choicer. I held to the notion that a fetus couldn’t fully be life, since it was dependent entirely on another for its existence. And I believed the notion that abortion is unfortunate, but it wasn’t any of the government’s business.

I wish I could point you to a specific point on my journey where my views shifted entirely. There was no dramatic morning where I woke up suddenly pro-life. My thoughts on the subject have meandered down many roads before winding up where they are today. I’ve been asked to tell you why I believe the way I do. — read full post at BlogHer

This is how I feel about the subject…

Did Chris Matthews & Media Pundits Make Women Mad?

9 January, 2008 (14:45) | debate, democrats, election, election 2008, feminism, Hillary Clinton, journalism, media, mommy bloggers, news, Obama, opinion, politics, SCHIP, women, youtube | By: Catherine Morgan

This is from a post at Tennessee Guerilla Women.

Everyone’s searching for reasons for Hillary’s victory in New Hampshire. In my view, she is simply the best person for the job, but there can be no doubt that the misogyny oozing from media pundits like Chris Matthews got New Hampshire women good and mad and they showed it with their votes. Women put Hillary over the top – the gender gap was 13 points!

After Hillary’s victory last night, Chris Matthews said he would never again underestimate Hillary Clinton. And then first thing this morning, Tweety was back in his usual misogynistic form (video below). I am a longtime MSNBC fan, but I had to switch to CNN last night — Tweety’s revolting sexism was making me vomit. Below are links to commentary on the Tweety Effect.

Bush Vetoes HealthCare For Needy Children…Again.

13 December, 2007 (00:25) | Bush, children, family, feminism, healthcare, news, parenting, politics, Republicans, SCHIP, women | By: Catherine Morgan

This is from Blue Bloggin.

Bush being the good Christian that he espouses, just gave sick and needy children in an early Christmas present ….a veto.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush vetoed legislation Wednesday that would have expanded government-provided health insurance for children, his second slap-down of a bipartisan effort in Congress to dramatically increase funding for the popular program.

It was Bush’s seventh veto in seven years – all but one coming since Democrats took control of Congress in January. Wednesday was the deadline for Bush to act or let the bill become law. The president also vetoed an earlier, similar bill expanding the health insurance program.

Bush vetoed the bill in private.  — read full article from AP

Can We Afford To Keep Waiting For HealthCare Reform?

9 December, 2007 (12:47) | democrats, economy, election 2008, family, healthcare, Hillary Clinton, opinion, parenting, politics, SCHIP | By: Catherine Morgan

This is from a post at Stone Soup Musings.

Clinton failed to pass health care reform in 1993 in part because the Canadian national health care system was held up as “the” model by progressives, and naturally conservatives trashed it and nothing got done. Well, here we are 14 years later and our health care coverage has eroded and the costs have skyrocketed. How has Canada fared? Better than us according to the EPI:

Where Do Presidential Candidates Stand On Poverty?

8 November, 2007 (12:26) | debate, democrats, election, Elizabeth Edwards, GOP, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Obama, Republicans, SCHIP | By: Catherine Morgan

I found this at Georgia Women Vote. It’s a link to an interactive web page, that allows you to compare the positions of presidential candidates on the issue of poverty. You should definitely check this one out.

If you live in Georgia, where 91 of our 159 counties are in “a state of persistent poverty”, then you care about where the presidential candidates (of both parties) stand on this key issue. The Annie Casey Foundation has an interactive web page up that allows you to compare and contrast the candidates positions on this key issue.

*I would also suggest you check out ExpertVoter.org – another great way to find out where the candidates stand on the issues (through videos).

SCHIP Battle Against Middle Class Children Continues

8 November, 2007 (11:27) | Bush, children, democrats, GOP, healthcare, opinion, parenting, SCHIP, women, youtube | By: Catherine Morgan

This is from Fact-esque, on the SCHIP controversy.

The country is facing a health care crisis of historic proportions. The bi-partisan, compromise SCHIP reauthorization legislation is a small step in the direction of helping lower middle class survive it at least as far as their children are concerned. It’s obvious that BushCo is holding these families hostage in order to advance his Kill the Poor and Middle Class agenda as well as to further his quest to remain relevant through the merciful end of his tragic term of office. Right now he’s getting away with it. It’s up to the Dems to be sure the plan backfires and, sadly, up to the people who will have to endure the wait for SCHIP to be reauthorized to find a way to survive.

Call your Congressperson today and tell him/her that you want the current bi-paritisan, compromise SCHIP bill passed unchanged.

The Politics of Universal Healthcare and SCHIP

7 November, 2007 (15:28) | Bush, children, democrats, healthcare, opinion, parenting, SCHIP, women | By: Catherine Morgan

This is from One Mom’s View: The Universal Healthcare Conundrum. There is an interesting conversation going on at the Soccer Mom Vote about Universal Health Care.

One article written by an American living in Montreal states that Canada’s Health Care system is the best thing since sliced bread.

Another article, written by a self-proclaimed libertarian gives the opposite view.

There are comments left, right, and all areas in-between. If you want to hear emotionally charged opinions on either side, I suggest you read both of them.

Here is my article, Why Free National Health Care is Never Free

Is Universal HealthCare Best?

5 November, 2007 (13:53) | healthcare, parenting, SCHIP | By: Catherine Morgan

Is Universal Healthcare Best?  Bobbi Jo at The Soccer Mom Vote thinks it is…

i am literally boiling over about the healthcare issue and must voice some perpective to all my fellow american citizens who have never lived in a country that has universal healthcare. i was born and raised in the usa (most of the time without health insurance) and after falling in love, have lived in montreal for 11 years.

. . .

i have to tell you, after living on both sides of the fence (so to speak), that canada’s universal healthcare is an AMAZING system that americans could only be so lucky to have! that is the plain, simple truth. those who disagree are most likely either:
