12 December, 2007 (15:22) | climate change, environment, green, news, politics, world | By: Catherine Morgan

This is a post from Eco Warrior.

The BBC reports on the Climate Change Summit in Bali:

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has opened high-level talks at the climate change conference in Bali with a call to action.

The deligates are working toward new emissions standards for 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol runs out.
It’s about time the US takes more than symbolic steps toward solutions.

House Passes Energy Bill

7 December, 2007 (09:36) | Bush, environment, gas prices, green, law, news | By: Catherine Morgan

This is from a post by Pamela Leavey at the Democratic Daily.

On Thursday, the House passed an energy bill with “the biggest increase in vehicle fuel-economy standards since gasoline cost less than a dollar a gallon.”

The L.A. Times reports the bill is headed for a “showdown in the Senate and a possible veto from President Bush.”

The measure would require a 40% increase in fuel efficiency for new cars and light trucks by 2020, for a fleetwide average of 35 miles per gallon, and would be the first congressional raising of the standards since they were established in 1975.

The bill is the Democrats’ first major effort to attack global warming and U.S. dependence on foreign oil since they won control of Congress a year ago.

The 235-181 vote came a day after a Senate panel advanced a separate measure that would cap greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, manufacturing facilities and other sources.

The Bush administration, spoiling for a fight and determined that the “Decider” would get his way, ”chastised Democratic leaders for pushing a “partisan bill” they knew had “no chance of being signed into law.””

Global Warming and Climate Skeptics

Blue Bloggin has a very extensive post on the Skeptics of Climate Change.

You might think that you know the answer, having heard, seen and read numerous counter-blasts aimed at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) over the course of this year, as the three components of its landmark climate assessment were published.

The IPCC and many of the world’s climate scientists would, of course, profoundly disagree with the conclusions evidenced by this small group, and I have linked to some articles which detail some of the science behind their disagreement.

Give The Gift Of Green

28 October, 2007 (20:18) | environment, green, women | By: Catherine Morgan

This is a post from Izzy Mom about giving reusable shopping bags as gifts…I think that sounds like a great idea. And if you are going to do it on a large scale (and buy more than 100), you can even have them personalized just like the supermarkets do (for as little as $0.99 each).

clothshoppingbag.jpg You know the holidays are coming up, right? And you KNOW what that means, right? Yep, shopping. Lots and lots of shopping. And lots of bags. Paper and plastic.

The paper bags from everyone in America buying groceries for Thanksgiving alone will probably set us back a few frillion trees and a lot of oxygen, ya know?

And then Christmas and Hannukah…more bags. Especially plastic ones from malls, department stores etc.

So I have this idea!

I’m suggesting that instead of, or perhaps in addition to a regular gift, that you give the gift of re-usable bags to your friends, family, kids’ teachers, the mailman, the lawn guy — anyone! Everyone!
