Romney, Huckabee, and Giuliani Speeches (full video)
Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Rudy Giuliani, all gave speeches tonight at the Republican National Convention. Here is commentary, along with video of each man’s speech in full. Did you see these speeches? Let me know what you think in comments.
From CNN Political Ticker…
This speech is about mockery – and I wonder whether that’s appealing to voters. I really think this tone is going to turn a lot of voters off – it’s ugly, it’s bitter, it’s nasty. There is a bullying tone to this speech, and to Romney’s speech, and I just don’t think it works.
Even less appealing: “When they gave up on Iraq, they gave up on America”? Now that’s insulting.
What they’re doing is re-running the 2004 campaign, which the Republicans won on the issue of terrorism. He’s saying the war on terror should be the supreme issue – but for most voters it’s the economy.

Romney just noted that government spending has doubled in Washington since 1980, because “Washington is controlled by Liberals”. Did anyone bother to tell this dingbat that Republicans have controlled the White House (and the preparing of the budget) for all except 8 years since 1980?

From Post-Ed Notes…
As far as political convention speeches go — setting aside content, for a moment — Mike Huckabee’s offering should be the template; a perfect mix of partisanship, humor, idealism, gravity and admiration of the presidential nominee.
As a columnist who deeply believed that a Huckbee nomination would have been catastrophic for the Republicans Party, I was truly surprised by focus the speech. Instead of eulogizing individual responsibility, “liberty,” “freedom” and capitalism, as was the case last week in Denver, Huckabee praised these ideals. He quoted Abraham Lincoln: “A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.” A truth that Republicans have forgotten these past few years.
