Alaska Senator Ted Stevens Is Indicted

Here is a guest post by Heather Holdridge of The Care2 Election Blog.

Alaska Senator Ted Stevens has just been indicted on seven counts of federal corruption.

Stevens is 84 and the longest-serving Republican Senator in history. Each of the seven counts is for failing to report income from renovations to his home in Alaska and receiving gifts. Making matters worse (or at least if you’re a Republican), Stevens is up for re-election and faces a strong challenge from Anchorage mayor Mark Begich.

Stevens is best known as a powerful appropriator (he served as chairman during the most recent period of Republican control of the Senate), wearing Incredible Hulk ties for big floor votes (hint: he’s cranky!), and most hilariously, as the guy who described the Internet as a “series of tubes” in a debate over Net Neutrality.

Oh, and his League of Conservation Voters rating in 2005-06 was 7%
