HHS to Consider Birth Control and IUDs Abortions
Today’s New York Times reports that a proposed rule circulation through the Department of Health and Human Services:
… defines abortion as follows: “any of the various procedures — including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.” [emphasis mine]
Remember, the right-wing religious zealots are not going to overturn Roe v. Wade because it is easier just restrict abortion (and birth control) until it is safe, legal, and never accessible.

So it appears that once again we are to be slaves to our biology and our only worth to society is to be the products of our wombs? Why oh why did I spend that time and money on college? Damn, for 34 yrs I thought my life was mine to do with as I saw fit in whatever way I saw fit. Not even my husband of 14 yrs has tried to tell me how to wear my hair let alone tell me I can or can’t use BC. He more than anyone, especially the gov’t, would at least have some say in OUR reproductive lives.
When I read this article I thought it was at first a poor joke. Then it hit me that this insanity was real!! Here is my take on the sensitivity of those who are forced to “discuss and prescribe” what they don’t agree with… I am a vegetarian. I am not a get up on the soap box and preach it vegetarian- I just live it, it’s MY choice (and I mean no offense to those who do get on their soap boxes, again it’s a choice). When people ask questions I answer them regarding my reasons but I realize that it’s my choice to live my life this way. I firmly believe in leading by example. I don’t work at the Beefhut and bitch and moan about how I am offended because “I have to serve meat”. I know that’s what those places do so I don’t work there. It’s pretty simple. If you are morally opposed to something don’t get a job there. I am sure there are plenty of right-wing- uber- religious places for Dr’s, nurses and other health care professionals to work where they don’t have to deal with the “ugliness” of, you know, real life stuff- not just BC but super painful menstral cycles, unbalanced hormones, fibroid cysts… all the other medical stuff that BC pills treat.
Another point that bothered me is what kind of government agency basis policy on a poll? Seriously how wrong is that thinking? Anyone who has had even a basic statistics class can tell you how numbers can be manipulated to support what the researcher is going after.
If anyone can tell me where the public can comment on the policy I would gladly do so but when I went the the HHS.gov site and searched for it I couldn’t find anything. Any help would be greatly apprciated.
