Romney and Huckabee: Defining Religion In Politics?

“The reason we have so much government is because we have so much broken humanity,” he said. “And the reason we have so much broken humanity is because sin reigns in the hearts and lives of human beings instead of the Savior.”

This is a problem. Last week, when Mitt said that religion is necessary for freedom it sounded a little weird, but the sentiment is not unusual for most religious people who have not embraced the totalitarian state: natural rights, like rights to life, liberty and autonomy, can flow readily from the understanding that humans are directly commissioned and reflective of God, granting them certain privileges that the animals don’t have, like free will. Traditionally, at least in classically liberal American society, we understand this to mean that people should be trusted and free to make decisions, with the least involvement of government possible.

It sounded weird because he got it backwards: freedom is necessary for religion. And, of course, for the rest of the reasons you elaborate don so well.
