Hi everyone. I decided to take some time today, and actually write my “about the blog” page for The Political Voices of Women.

So here goes…

This is a blog answering the question, “Where are all the women political bloggers?” Well, the answer is…They are here.

It began simply as my response to a New York Times article on the lack of women political bloggers. Rather than comment on this article, I decided to see for myself.

What started as a list of 100 women bloggers, grew to 200. And then I decided to take a leap of faith and start a blog as a spin-off to the list. Now the blog and the list have taken on a life of their own, and each day they are growing and changing, mostly due to contributions of other women bloggers.

Women will play a powerful role in this upcoming election, and people (as well as the MSM and political campaigns) are finally recognizing that. For this reason, I believe that our [blogging] voices will begin to be heard and taken more seriously than ever before. I also hope that many more women will begin to use “the power of the political blog”, and join in on this unfolding phenomena. Women can (and I believe will) change the face of politics…And not just single women, or soccer moms…I’m talking about, the “collective voice” of all womenand that includes you too.

There are not that many places (if any) on the net, where women can be exposed to all sides of the issues (conservative, liberal, and everything in between) and also feel comfortable voicing their opinions…But, it’s my hope that this blog and it’s community will end up being that place.

I don’t want this site to be “defined” by one or another political affiliation or opinion…I’m hoping it will be defined by the women. My hope is that women of all political positions will come here to post their opinions, report on the latest political news, and initiate conversation. Basically, having our “collective” voices heard…and gaining respect in what “seems to be” a male dominated arena. Maybe even showing the guys a thing or two about how it “should” be done.

So there you have it…I guess it’s a kind of mission statement for this blog. I hope you will also take it as an invitation to join in on the conversation here. Welcome.

As far as I can tell, this is truly a unique blog in that you post a variety of viewpoints here. One of the biggest drawbacks of most of the blogs out there is that they simply reinforce one main viewpoint. And generally anyone who comments with a strikingly alternative argument is quickly labeled a “troll” and sent on their way.

Providing this forum where women with a variety of views can interact will, I believe, help women to feel a part of the political system which so often ignores us. And hopefully that feeling of engagement will translate into further involvement in politics at all levels — from neighborhood associations on up. Thank you for taking the helm on this, Catherine!
